Assumption

Why is Lucifer so mad at Mary? Satan was initially a very beautiful and powerful angel, but because of pride, he wanted to be “Like God.” Due to that, he was brought down. Mama Mary, on the other hand, was humble. In fact, she was fearful and confused when she was told that she would be the mother of God. In her humility, she was exalted. The angel Gabriel told her, “Hail Favored One.”

Yesterday, we celebrated the Solemnity of the Assumption – Mary being assumed into heaven body and soul. It is yet another testimony of how God works in the lives of humble people.

What then, is the significance of Assumption in our lives?

  1. There is Eternal Life. We are only passing in this world and we have a home in heaven. Eternal life reminds us of what is important and what is fleeting in life, because we came into this world with nothing and we are leaving this world with nothing.
  2. The Importance of our Body. The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, but how have we treated our bodies here on earth? If the body is not important, why was Mary’s body assumed into heaven? That is why at death, the Church treats the body with reverence. It has to be buried in a holy place and not for the ashes to be scattered to the sea or forest.
  3. Humility. Humility. Humility. Being a mother, Mary did not have an easy life. Even more so, being the mother of Jesus. Remember that she had many, many difficult moments in her life. Yet, she trusted God in all things. She continued to be a blessing to others like when Elizabeth was pregnant, like how she travelled 60 kms to be with her, yet she was still a mother to Jesus, the Son of God.

In today’s Mass we remember the words to describe  Mama Mary, “Blessed are you among Women.” Also, the bible tells us that the prayers of holy people are very powerful. That is why we must remember that we have Mama Mary praying with us and for us in heaven, body and soul.
