Why is there so much bad news in the newspapers, on the radio, on the TV, on social media? According to a study, it is because bad news sells. We people would rather read if it is bad news instead of good news. Since media is a business, these companies feature the bad news or they focus on the bad news in the story. Then, due to an overload of bad news, what follows is anxiety, fear, anger, worry, depression, and hopelessness.
The challenge of the Gospel is to go back to basics. To go back to the fact that God is good. God knows what we are going through. Three things we can open our eyes to prove that God is good.
- God will never abandon us. In life there are good times and there are bad times. When it gets bad, it can get really bad. A friend lost both her husband and mother in a span of one week. How she was able to manage, she said, “the strength is from God.” God will never abandon us. Romans 8:28 says, “All good things work for those who love God.”
(Alam natin na sa lahat ng bagay ay gumagawa ang Diyos para sa mga nagmamahal sa kanya).
- God Provides. I met a couple who would always go to the feast of San Anthony to give thanks. They are retired public school teachers. How were they able to raise nine children who are now all very successful? They would always say that with St. Anthony’s intercession, God provides.
- God Answers Prayers. Because God knows best, he grants prayers when it is according to His will. He says “No” to our prayers because he has a better plan. He too says “Not yet” because He knows of a better plan. Either way, we have to pray unceasingly because negativity can enter into our minds easily.
In our circles, let us remember that they are also full of bad news. You talk to people and all of us are hurt, all of us have burdens, all of us have crosses. But it doesn’t end there. The Good news is we have God. He will never abandon us, He will always provide and after all things in this life, we have a home with him.
