All of us have experienced someone passing away. How we wish to be by their bedside to say goodbye. Of course, there are also the last wishes or the “huling bilin.” For a person about to transition to the next life, the last wishes are the ones he or she feels are most important.
In St. Mark’s Gospel, we hear of the last wishes of Christ that are most important for Him: “Go to all the ends of the earth and preach the Gospel.” In other words, let us be witnesses. Why? Just look at the world today.
One example is on Facebook. If there is an article of a priest or bishop saying this or that, look at the comments: all negativity and curses. In fact, one person made a comment: “We have really perverse values: The one who tells us that it is alright to have extramarital affairs, we applaud; the one who tells us what is right and what is good, we curse?”
How do we preach the Gospel to all the ends of the earth?
- By being witnesses not only in words but most important in deeds. How can one be witness to God when after a procession, the people suddenly fight for the flowers and leave the patio full of garbage?
- Standing up for what is right. Certainly, the most convenient thing in life is just to mind our own business and just keep quiet. How do we make this world a better place? All evil needs to prevail is for the good people to keep quiet.
- Studying the faith. How we wish that life was just white and black. How we wish that life was right or wrong. It is not simple, hence the challenge to read, analyze and discern.
In closing let me share with you a prayer that shows how inverted our morals are and why we need to spread the Gospel.
Heavenly Father, we come before You today to ask Your forgiveness and seek Your direction and guidance. Lord, we know Your Word says, “Woe to those who call evil good,” but that’s exactly what we’ve done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values.
