Once in our class, our priest-professor asked us, “Who is the mother of Perpetual Help?” The natural and loud response was, “Mary!” Then he asked the next question, “Who is the Perpetual Help?” For a while, the class was quiet until one answered, “Jesus?”
My dear friends, God is our perpetual help. He is the only source of our help. In the Gospel, Peter and the disciples, who were fishermen and surely experts, had a fruitless night of fishing. Yet, when they were told by Jesus when to fish, where to fish, and how to fish, although it was illogical, they had the humility to listen and follow. The result – they were able to catch 153 large fish!
My dear friends, three things about God’s help.
- God has each given us a talent. If God has given us the talent to fish, then, by all means, use this to bless oneself and others. If one is given the talent to sing, by all means, use this talent well.
- Continue to Trust in the Lord. In the Gospel, certainly Peter and the six other disciples were experts in fishing. Yet, no matter how good one is, there are days of frustration. Trust in the Lord.
- Prayer is listening to the Lord. Peter had the humility to listen to Jesus on how to fish. I am sure in the mind he must be saying, “I am the expert here, who are you to tell me what to do?” Look what following God does.
May we continue to ask God for help in our need. There are times the help is given instantly. There are times the help is given after some time. There are times the help is given in another way and another form. Either way, God will always help.
In closing let me share with you a quote from Albert Casing: “When you do not understand what is happening in your life, just close your eyes, take a deep breath and say, God, I know it is your plan just help me through it.”
