During the time of Jesus, many people wanted to follow Christ. Perhaps they say it was his power and influence, the miracles he performed, the teachings with authority, and the many material blessings that he received.
However, what they only saw was the outside. What they did not know were the sacrifices and challenges inside, three of which are as follows:
- To deny oneself. Jesus said that he came to serve and not to be served. This can only happen when one knows how to put oneself aside and put the welfare of others first.
- To take up our Cross. When one stands up for what is right, what is true and what is good, one surely gets persecuted. This is something that Jesus experienced and his followers will surely experience as well when the cross has been picked up.
- To follow God. In this life, there cannot be two masters: “You will love one and despise the other.” Now more than ever, in this world, it is all about money, power, and fame. Jesus reminds us of poverty, obedience, and a heart only for the Lord.
That is why in each Mass, now more than ever, we need people who will truly follow God. As they say, it is better to light just one candle than to curse the darkness.
