Throughout the history of mankind, people have seen Jesus, who perhaps is the most popular figure in humanity, in different ways. Some see him as a Great Prophet. Some see him as a Great Teacher and Preacher. Some see him as a Miracle Worker. Some see him as a Religious Leader. In Islam, Jesus is an important prophet. In Judaism, Jesus is not the awaited Messiah.
In the Gospel, Jesus tells the Jews that he is God. He doesn’t need the testimony of John the Baptist. Just look at His works.
Since Jesus is both Man and God, three things we remember:
- First, Jesus knows what it is like to be human. Jesus knows what it is like to be betrayed (by Judas); to be denied (by Peter); to be abandoned (by the other apostles). He knew the love of parents (Joseph and Mary). He knew what is like to have friends (Mary, Martha, and Lazarus) and he knew what is it is like to have enemies (Pharisees, scribes, etc.). He was like us in all things except sin.
- Second, Jesus knows that humans can be divine. While we human beings are weak, sinful, and not perfect, Jesus showed that as a human being, He can trust God, He can forgive, and He can love.
- Third, God will do everything and anything for our Salvation. We are only in this life passing by. This life is fleeting, ever-changing, and not to mention, short and swift. God sent his Son so that we will not perish, but in fact, be saved.
That is why in each Mass, we bring our prayers to God with the greatest confidence that He knows what we are going through. He is after all 100 percent human, as well as 100 percent divine.
