Once I had to visit the Underground River in Puerto Princesa in Palawan. In the 1.5 km trip of God’s marvelous creation, the guide made a comment which perhaps describes one the mysteries of life.
“Even in the deepest recesses of the world, animal and marine life are still bustling.”
How many times do we find ourselves in the “deepest recesses of life.” Often, we become anxious and hopeless, which is a very common human experience when we encounter the unfamiliar. Then we cry out the cry of Jesus, “My God, My God, why have you abandoned me?”
But then again we remember another saying, “It is when it is darkest, that the stars in the heavens shine the brightest!” How many of us in difficult times are strengthened by the mysterious ways of the Lord?
Once, I was anxious about some things until I encountered a medallion of St. Padre Pio. What is one of the quotes of St. Pio? “Pray, Hope and Don’t Worry. Anxiety is useless.” Talk about the mysterious ways of God. Talk about the many signs of the Lord.
Hence, in the Gospel Jesus did not entertain anymore the request for a sign as he knew that hearts of the people did not have faith.
Three ways to see the many signs of God in life.
- Prayer. Not so much to ask because God knows already what we need. It more of a relationship. Since God will never leave us nor abandon us, how beautiful if we reciprocate such friendship.
- Gratitude. “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for his love endures forever.”It is different if a person knows how to say thank you. The blessings still outweigh by far the challenges in life which are also fleeting and passing.
- Hope. Things may never happen the way the we want it, but God knows best. How inspiring are the words of God to the prophet Jeremiah, “Before you were born, I already knew you.” Hence our lives are in the hands of God.
In this Mass, we thank the Goodness of God. Because we are never alone, His marks signs are everywhere, indeed for one who has faith.
