In the years 2007 to 2008, the United States experienced a financial crisis that affected the economy of the world, caused millions to lose their jobs, and witnessed the closing of many financial institutions.
This would make us wonder because the United States and these institutions are supposed to hire the most learned and the best finance employees. How then did this happen?
This only shows the reality that being learned in the eyes of the world is different from being learned in the eyes of God. This was what Jesus was pointing out in the Gospel. The Pharisees and the scribes, who were learned in the eyes of the world, did not recognize Jesus in their midst.
Three reflections on the attitude of the Pharisees and Scribes.
- Pride. Despite the many cases of possession that Jesus did, what did they say, “This man drives out demons only by the power of Belzebul, the prince of demons.” What did Jesus do instead? He continued to give God greater glory in all the things he did.
- Power. Jesus was already becoming a threat to them because he was gaining popularity and fame. Hence, they always wanted to find an opportunity to have Him arrested. What did Jesus do instead? He continued to serve.
- Hypocrisy. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First, clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside will also be clean. What did Jesus do instead? He continues to stand up for what is right, what is true, and what is good.
In this Mass, we pray that we may see the hand of God in our everyday lives. May we see God in all the people we encounter. May we know the will of God in our lives.
