Everything that is happening in the world today is often only viewed politically, economically, or militarily. However, let us not forget to also look at conflicts in the spiritual realm. Yes, we live in a world where there is the seen and unseen, and the greatest battle is happening in the unseen – good versus evil.
For example, Sr. Lucia of Fatima told Cardinal Carlo Caffara that “a decisive battle between the kingdom of Christ and Satan will be over marriage and the family.” Look now at the push for abortion which they call healthcare and a right. Also, look for the push for same-sex marriage, saying that love wins. When one speaks against these sins there will be persecution. One will be branded as not inclusive.
Today we celebrate the feast of St. Benedict. Three things about him that we can do to fight evil in the world and society:
- Ora et Labora. In Latin, it means, “To work is to pray.” May our work be a prayer to God; may our work be pleasing to God; may our work give God the greater glory. St. Benedict believed in work, prayer, and rest. Compare it to the world that works only to earn money and lots of it.
- Fear of God. St. Benedict emphasized Fear of God, not because of punishment, but because of God’s greatness and love. Compare it to the world that doesn’t want to offend people with their gender issues but does not care to offend God because He is the creator and has only created two genders.
- St. Benedict Medal. Pope Benedict XIV solemnly approved and recommended the use of the medal to the faithful in 1742. His medals are powerful against evil. In fact, the letters surrounding the back of the medal mean: “Begone, Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself.”
In this Mass, let us continue to ask St. Benedict’s intercession in giving meaning to our lives: Fear of God, proper use of work, and protection from the evil one. This should give us strength in a world and society that has lost its moral compass.
