Mother’s Day

According to a survey, the seven most popular words of a mother to her children when she is angry are as follows:

  • Because I said so
  • Don’t roll your eyes at me
  • I am not asking you, I am telling you
  • Be thankful you still have a roof over your head
  • Don’t cry or I will give you something to cry about
  • One day you will thank me
  • You have your father’s DNA

These words bring a smile to our faces because these words have been uttered from one generation to the next. When the younger generation grows old and has a greater concept of life, they always say – “Mom was right after all.” In other words, these are words of love.

Talking about words of love, in the Gospel  Jesus talks about The Words of the Father. Anyone who keeps the Words of the Father, the Commandments of the Father, loves the Father.

Three Commandments of Love:

  • First, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” God loves us as if we were an only child of a family. Hence, we have to reciprocate this love, and the best way to do so is to trust him. In contrast, if we include superstitious practices in our faith, it lets him know we do not trust or love him.
  • Second, the words of Christ, “Love one another as I have loved you.” This is the love that is not emotional. It is the love that for better or for worse, in sickness or in health, in good times and difficult times. Faithfulness. Yes, as God is faithful to us.
  • Third, the commandment of love, “Honor your father and mother.” There are no perfect parents but they will do everything and anything for us to have better lives, despite their own shortcomings, weaknesses, pains, and crosses in life. Hopefully, sooner than later we realize all their love, sacrifices, giving, and forgiving. Hopefully, sooner than later we realize, “Dad was right after all, Mom was right after all.”

Being Mother’s Day this weekend, we also remember our mothers whether they are still here on earth or have moved on to the next life.

Bern Williams says, “Sooner or later, we all quote our mothers.” Her words indeed, are words of love, even when she is angry.
