Annunciation

When Adam and Eve sinned, the very first promise of God would be the Messiah. However the coming of the Messiah was not easy. In the Book of Genesis, it was said, “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel”

The Woman that was being referred to is the Woman in the Gospel tomorrow. Before the Messiah was to be born, the angel Gabriel had to wait for the yes of Mary. The vocation of Mary was to be the Mother of the Messiah.

Three things we see in the Vocation of Mary:

  • With God nothing is impossible. Mary’s state of being full of grace means there is no room for sin in Mary’s life. This is very much understandable because from her Jesus Christ would be conceived, who is sinless because of divinity. How does this all happen? With God nothing is impossible.
  • It is not going to be easy. What does it take and what does it entail to bare a son through the Holy Spirit? What does it take and what does it entail to be the Mother of the Messiah? So many questions and so much uncertainty indeed leads us to fear. Hence, the assurance of Angel Gabriel, “Do not be afraid Mary.”
  • It needs our response of love. Mary may not have understood everything what was happening but she knew that God has a plan and that he can be trusted. Hence, she was able to say, “Yes, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done to me according to your word.”

For tomorrow’s mass of the Annunciation, first, we remember our own vocation. Not easy, we get hurt, we make mistakes, and we encounter uncertainties. Yet let us realize that God has a plan, God can be trusted, God will provide the grace and strength and with God nothing is impossible.
