Many times in our lives we are harassed by how little we have. How do you run a seminary with 98 seminarians with the prices ever increasing? How do you continue to send your children to school with prices ever increasing? How do you help out people while having your own needs?
In the Gospel, the apostles were also harassed by the little they had – How do you feed five thousand men, women, and children of people with only five loaves and two fish?
What did Christ do before the miracle of the feeding of thousands happened?
- He said the blessing. This is acknowledging God that He is the source of all blessings. Further, that we should be thankful for the blessings. Notice that even how seemingly little the blessings are, Jesus still gave thanks.
- He broke it. When one breaks bread that means there is a bond, there is a relationship. Yes, meals become more meaningful when done in a group of people who matter.
- He shared it. This is the reality of blessings. As we have received freely, we should also give freely.
In this Mass, we realize three things:
- First, with God nothing is impossible. How can five loaves of bread and two fish feed thousands of people?
- Second, God gives generously. When they gathered the leftovers, there were twelve wicker baskets full.
- Third, even the smallest act of kindness goes a long way. Who would ever think that the generous benefactor of the bread and the fish would witness one of the greatest miracles? Yes, when we give, may miracles happen.
