When Adam and Eve sinned, the very first promise was made – to send the Messiah and save mankind. However this Messiah, to be able to come here on earth, was to be born of a virgin. That virgin that will bear the Son of God has to be pure – and therefore she was immaculately conceived. Yesterday we celebrated the end of her mission on earth – and She was assumed into heaven body and soul.
Hence, three things that the Feast of the Assumption makes us remember:
- God desires our eternal life. For God, there is only one thing that matters – eternal life. He will do everything and anything to the point of even sending his only begotten Son. Hence if this is most important for God, let the desire of eternal life be our most important concern in this life. Everything else is fleeting and passing.
- The Dignity of Human Beings. We always look at humanity as sinful and weak. We might always say, “Tao lang po.” We ourselves are putting down the dignity of human beings. Yet, God saw that dignity by his Son himself being human, as well as being born from a human being. This is proof of the great dignity of humans.
- Good will always prevail. Satan just has one plan, to destroy the plan of God for us humans. Yet, with Mary being assumed into heaven, this only means that despite all the wickedness and snares of the devil, Good will always prevail.
That is why as we celebrate Assumption, may we remember that God has a plan for each life: Each life will be blessed differently and Each life will have its own crosses and storms in life. Some are heavier than others. But in all these, the only things that matter is eternal life.
