The very first of the ten commandments is I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt not have strange gods before Me. The reality is though, we compromise our faith in God in so many ways:
- First superstition: If God is God, then why do we follow so many superstitious practices, even justifying, “It won’t hurt.”
- Second, money: Jesus said that we cannot have two masters. We are going to love one and despise the other. We cannot serve both God and money.
- Third, my will and not God’s will. Each day of our lives we make decisions. While as Christians the most basic is choosing right over wrong, the more difficult one is following the Will of the Lord. As Jesus would always say, “Your will and not my will.”
In the Gospel, we are often given the imagery that our faith needs to be nurtured so that from the smallest seed, it becomes the biggest of all seeds. Three things we should nurture our faith with:
- Studying our Faith. Our Church is the only Church founded by Christ. It has been here for 21 centuries with all the knowledge and wisdom. It even produced the bible. Hence, let us get to know our faith.
- Persevere. No faith is left untested. No relationship is exempted from doubt. Yes, even if God’s time is different from our time, his ways are different from our ways, his wisdom is different from our wisdom, and he is always faithful.
- Trusting God. This is best explained through the testimony of a family. Due to hard times, they resorted to putting a jumper on their electricity meter. Eventually, though, they were bothered. “Even if times are hard, this is not a reason for us to steal”. After some time, they removed the jumper and the bill shot up. It was not easy and there were a lot of adjustments to be made. After a year passed they could only look back and wonder how they were able to manage, by doing the right thing. God can be trusted.
Let us always remember to give God our 100%, because he always gives us more. Let us continue to trust him, especially in these difficult times.
