In the ministry of deliverance and exorcism, the use of sacramentals is very important in fighting evil.
- We usually make use of the Rosary. A devil once said in an exorcism session that if Catholics knew of the power of the Rosary, they would be praying 24 hours
- Holy Water is very efficacious in protecting a place
- Candles remind the evil spirits of Jesus being the light of the world
Last Thursday, July 11, was the Feast of St. Benedict of Nursia. Attributed to him is one sacramental that is also very efficacious – St. Benedict’s Medallion. It is not only associated with many miracles but is also used in exorcism. Why is it very efficacious?
This two-sided medal includes several details one might overlook at first. Upon closer inspection:
- On the front is an image of Benedict, with a cross in his right hand and the Rule of Benedict in his left.
- At his feet are a chalice and a raven, images that call to mind Benedict’s miraculous deliverance from poison.
- Surrounding the image of the saint are the words crux patris benedicti, Latin for “the cross of the Father Benedict.” Along the outer edge of the medal are the words ejus in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur, which means “at our death may we be fortified by his presence.”
- The reverse side of Benedict’s medal contains several powerful prayers, written as initials for wearers to memorize, among them CSSML for crux sacra sit mihi lux, meaning “the holy cross be my light,”
- Also written is NDSMD for non draco sit mihi dux, which translates as “let not the dragon be my guide.”
- Around the edges are letters signifying these Latin mottoes: VRSNSMV—SMQLIVB, vade retro satana, numquam suade mihi vana! sunt mala quae libas. ipse venena bibas, meaning, “Begone, Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!”
- At the top is usually a pax for “peace.”
That is why in the Mass let us always remember that we are in the midst of the greatest battle – Spiritual Warfare.
Jesus reminds us that there are no neutrals, there are no fence-sitters. It is either we are with God or not.
Good will always prevail. May that be seen in our life.
