We live in a society that always pursues money. Why? It is the belief that it buys happiness. Hence, a study was made where it was found that indeed it does – but only after a certain amount. Once that amount is reached, no matter how much more money you have, it does not bring any amount of extra happiness anymore.
In the Gospel, Jesus was tested by the Sadducees and was given a case about a woman who married all seven brothers who passed away, one after the other. Why did she have to marry the brothers? This was to ensure that the money she inherited, due to the death of her husband, did not go to anyone else and stayed within the family. In other words, it was all about the money.
Hence, here is Jesus reminding us about three realities of money and eternal life.
- We came into this world with nothing, we are leaving this world with nothing. Hence, whether in plenty or in simplicity, whether inherited, worked for, or worst, ill-gotten, we are all leaving it behind. What is the point of a life pursuing only money?
- Why do some have more than others? In the eyes of faith, each person has their own calling. God blesses people differently based on their calling. Hence, there is no reason to count other people’s blessings, God will always provide.
- The Key to Eternal Life – “Whatever you do to the least of your brethren, you do unto me”. Jesus told his disciples that on judgment day, the sheep would be separated from the goat. The sheep are the blessed and the goat are the cursed. Why the difference, whatever you do to the least of your brethren you did unto me. Hence what matters is the kindness that people have shown.
There is a joke that says, “Money cannot buy happiness but it is better to cry in a mansion.” But come to think of it, why cry in a mansion when you can rejoice in heaven. May we be good stewards of God’s blessings.
