We live in a generation that loves to show off. Just go to social media: people posting pictures where they are, what they are eating, the company that they are with, and the happiness that they are experiencing.
Whatever the motivation they have in showing off, there are some things better kept unsaid. In other words, these things are kept unsaid because it is between ourselves and God. In the Gospel, three things are often mentioned:
- First, Almsgiving. There is nothing like true giving. Nobody else knows except for God. Further, especially when it comes to giving to the poor, God cannot be outdone in generosity. Why show off?
- Second, Prayer. There is nothing more powerful than prayer. Jesus said, on one hand, to pray unceasingly. On the other hand, Jesus also said not to babble when we pray. God answers all our prayers. Why show off?
- Third, Fasting. There is nothing more intimate than fasting. This is the moment when God is closest. Why show off?
That is why in this Mass, we pray that the only person we shall please is God. Further, it is only to him that we will give an accounting of the life we have lived. Hence, almsgiving, prayer, and fasting.
