As it was then and as it is now, one of the biggest headaches and heartache of people is tenants. You lease a property and the next thing you know, tenants do not pay, they do not take care of the property, they will not leave and yes, they even harass you with a court case. How can people be so ungrateful?
This is true with our spiritual life as well. God lent us everything: time, talent, and treasure. The next thing we know, we do not use them, or even worse, we do not use them well. The biggest corruption scandals are done by people who have the talent, intelligence, and influence. How can people be so ungrateful?
Three things to help us always be grateful:
- All that we have is only lent to us. We came into the world with nothing, we are leaving the world with nothing. Hence, all that we have is only lent to us no matter how hard we worked for it. Also, remember, the Lord gives and the Lord takes.
- Contentment. The most contented people are those who are grateful. Try giving 50 pesos to a store vendor and you will be amazed with the joy it brings. On the other hand, 50 pesos might not even bring a smile to a rich young student. A person who is content always has enough, and because of that, he or she should be able to share.
- Count your own blessings and not those of others. Each life is different. Each life is blessed differently according to the mission, calling, or purpose. Hence, there is no point in counting other people’s blessings as it brings loneliness, envy, and lack of gratitude. On the other hand, count your own blessings and realize that we all have enough even in simplicity.
