We typically look at life based on two things: good luck and bad luck. That is why in these year-end celebrations, although we are Catholics, superstitious practices are an insult to God because it suggests we do not trust him. Many Catholics would still do it and say that it won’t hurt. We just want good luck or we just want money to come in.
However, in the plan of the Lord, there is no bad luck or good luck because we cannot predict life. For example, if a person wins the lotto, we say good luck. In the process though, the family starts fighting over the money and soon ends up broken. Or someone gets sick and we say bad luck, but then because of the sickness, he/she is able to fix their life and relationships and eventually die very much prepared.
In the Gospel, in the eyes of the world, Mary was in Crisis. She will give birth to a Son through the Holy Spirit. How do you explain to Joseph? How do you explain to Joakim and Ana? How do you explain to family, neighbors, and friends about the pregnancy?
But what does Mary do? She praises God! “My soul praised the goodness of the Lord.”
Why praise God in difficult times?
- We know that God has a plan. He did not just put us here so that we just take care of our lives. Remember Christ would always say, “The will of my father and not my will.” The Bible reminds us, “For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah)
- All happens for a reason and purpose. We only see things very limited, that is why if we feel it would do us good, we are happy, but if we feel it will be hard for us, we feel sad. For a person of faith though, all happens for a reason and purpose. Hence always be hopeful.
- There is still so much to be grateful for. When we are in difficult times, the temptation is only to see what is bad. Because of that, we forget that there is still so much to be grateful for – starting with life itself.
That is why when times are difficult or when in a crisis, we always remember:
- Always pray. God is just a prayer away.
- Count your blessings. Family, true friends, and the things you have that you might take for granted.
- Always be hopeful. This challenge will soon come to pass.
