How many of us, from time to time, complain that we are tired of life already? Never-ending problems, always in debt, a sickness that won’t get healed, a loved one who has gone astray, a broken relationship, nothing is happening to a person we are helping, too many battles in life, or maybe life simply does not make sense anymore.
Then again, when we feel like throwing the towel, there is still left in us a certain sense of hope to go on no matter what. That is why the Gospel gives us three things we can do, in order to go on.
- Come to me all who labor. Let us make prayer our first option and not last resort. We should not ask the Lord, “Why this burden”, but rather what. “What Lord are you telling me in a time like this and what should I do?” In fact, we are challenged to pray unceasingly, not to change the perfect will of God, but for us to know the perfect will of God. “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”
- Take my yoke. A yoke is used by animals to plow. In other words, despite the heavy crosses, despite hitting rock bottom, despite the void that we feel, let us continue to serve. As Jesus said, “I came to serve and not to be served”. The act of washing the feet was a gesture of service even if Christ knew that death was just around the corner.
- Meek and Humble of Heart. Let us not be ashamed to open up our problems and burdens. Let us not be ashamed to ask for help. Let us humble ourselves to accept “I cannot do it on my own”. It is in situations like this that people will be there in times of need. It will be in situations like this that God works miraculously.
May we continue to find rest in the Lord. While the world looks at it as a waste of time, in the eyes of faith it is different. It is a part of life and a part of our spiritual life: Prayer, Service, and Humility.
