Privileged Class

Since time immemorial man has been separated by two realities: the haves and the have-nots; the upper class and the commoners; the rich and those who were not rich. In fact, we have ways of separating people and putting them in different groups.

  • When riding a plane, it is First class / Business class on one side and Economy class on the other side
  • When entering a country, the citizens are separated from the visitors
  • When in a private club, the members are separated from the guests
  • When in Church, the lay volunteers are separated from the regular Mass-goers

In the Gospel, the Jews thought that they were the Children of God and thus should be separated from the gentiles. Yet, when Jesus said that God also blesses the gentiles, this got the Jews angered. They felt they were better and that God should have nothing to do with the gentiles.

That is why when we feel better than others, three things we remember:

  1. Check for self-esteem issues. Typically, the one with low self-esteem tries to raise it by putting others down.

  2. Nothing is forever. Whatever we have that makes us feel better than others, whether it be money, power, fame, looks, connection, intelligence, etc. is only temporary. How will you deal with people when these peripheries are taken away?
  3. The Victim becomes the Victimizer. We all have our fair share of discrimination because we were not economically well off, we did not come from an affluent background, the way we looked, the way we spoke, the way we dressed. Without us being careful, eventually, the victim may become the victimizer.

That is why let us always remember that in the eyes of God all of us are equal. Yes though, he blesses people differently according to the mission and vocation given. Hence there should be no need to feel inferior or superior, because as the saying goes: we all came from dust and to dust we shall return. “At the end of a chess game, the king and pawn enter the same box”.

The truly privileged, are those who enter the kingdom of God.
