When Adam and Eve sinned by eating the apple in the garden, God told the serpent in the Book of Genesis, “ And I will put enmity between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
This passage is very powerful because it tells us three things:
- First, the reality of spiritual warfare. In the world that we live in, there is the seen and the unseen. In the unseen, there is the good versus evil. Who are the main protagonists? The Woman and the serpent.
- Second, the passage talks about the seed of the woman, which is none other than the Savior.
- Third, That good will be victorious. While Jesus will crush the head of the serpent, the best that the serpent could do is strike the heel.
Today we celebrate the birth of the Woman, Mama Mary. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness – when he promises, he makes sure he keeps it. Also, With the birth of Mama Mary comes three realities:
- God wants us to be saved. The Bible tells us that God so loved the world that he gave us his only begotten Son. This Son is Jesus. Jesus was to be born of a Virgin. Hence, Mary played a very prominent role in the desire of God that we all be saved.
- God has a plan for all of us. The birth and mission of Mary remind us that all of us are in this world because God has a plan for each of us. This plan may be very difficult at times, and that is why “Mary kept all these things in her heart.”
- God has given a Mother. Of all the roles of Mary, the most prominent one is being a Mother to Jesus. Eventually, Jesus founded the Church through Peter. Hence, Mary too became the mother of the Church.
Typical of a Mother, Mary prays for us and prays with us.
Typical of a Mother, Mary wants the best for us – She brings us to Jesus.
Typical of Mother, Mary protects us. Many exorcists would testify to the power of the Rosary, the power of Mama Mary’s intercession in fighting evil.
In all the things Mary does for us, we remember the passage: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”
All the things Mama Mary does for us are a testimony that God is with us.
