It is said that while the world can produce enough food for 7.5 billion people, about ten percent go hungry each day. Some causes of hunger are poverty, unequal distribution of food, war and conflict, climate change, and poor nutrition.
Yet as human beings, since we are body and soul, if the body hungers, so does the soul. There is a hunger of the soul that no matter what economic class we are from, we feel and experience it. Symptoms of a soul that is hungry:
- There is this very strong desire for something or someone
- The feeling of emptiness
- The feeling of being lost or having no direction
- The feeling that something is missing
Due to this, we indulge in food to alcohol, from the occult to drugs, from materialism to hedonism.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life”.
- First, he refers to the Eucharist. At the last supper, he got the bread and said, “This is my body.” Hence, his real presence is in the bread which we can consume.
- Second, human beings always hunger spiritually. Jesus said, “I may have life and all its fullness”. That is why the invitation to his disciples is his invitation to us – “Come follow me.” In other words, when we find our mission in life, we will be fulfilled.
- Third, Prayer. The apostles saw the very powerful prayer in the life of Jesus. Hence, the request, “Teach us how to pray.” Jesus also reminds us that God is a prayer away. Whatever we are going through in life, we pray unceasingly.
We remember the words of St. Augustine: In the heart of every person is a hole that only God can fill. Hence, we remember prayer, the Eucharist, and mission. We remember that Jesus is the bread of life.
