It is said that Malcolm Forbes once said, “He who dies with the most toys wins.” While it may automatically bring a smile to your face, it will also make you think deeper – “Is life just about accumulating material things?” Then again, what is the point. “We came into this world with nothing, we are leaving this world with nothing.” What happens next?
In history, Alexander the Great, who once was very powerful and wealthy, had three requests before he died:
- “Physicians alone, are to carry my body. This is to remind people that doctors have limitations. When it is your time, it is your time”.
- “Strewn along the path of my grave will be gold, silver, and precious stones while my body is being carried for burial. This is to remind people that not even a fraction of gold will come with me. Whatever earned in the earth remains here”.
- “I want my hands to dangle from my coffin. This is to remind people that we came into this world empty-handed in this world and we will go empty-handed”.
The Gospel often reminds us that we are only passing in this world and it is the desire of the Lord that we have eternal life. Jesus talks about He being the bread. Three things about the Bread.
- The bread of life is the flesh of Jesus. Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. We are never alone in life; God is always with us.
- He who eats this bread will not die. If you consume the teachings of Jesus, you will have eternal life. We in particular remember the teaching of Jesus, “Whatever you do to the least of your brethren, you do unto me.”
- The living bread came down from heaven. God always provides not only materially, but most important spiritually.
Presence, Guidance, and Provision.
