It is the desire of every Christian to walk the path to holiness. To do so, the Church has given some “dos and don’ts” in this journey. Jesus often reminds us that more than from the outside, what really matters is what is on the inside.
One such example is when Jesus tells of the parable of two people: the pharisee, holy on the outside but judgemental on the inside. Then there’s the sinner, far from God on the outside, yet holy on the inside. What is the key? Humility.
Three humbling things we must realize on our path to holiness.
- None of us are perfect. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We can sin because of omission. That is, the things we should have done but did not do, or by omission, are the sins we have done that hurt God, others, and ourselves.
- Do not compare. Externally, like what is in the Gospel, the pharisee seemed holy. Yet, God sees what it is in the heart.
- God sees everything. In the end, we will all face God for judgment. We may fool people but we cannot fool God. The basis for eternal life is, “Whatever you do to the least of your brethren you do unto me.”
That is why as we continue our earthly journey, let it be through the path of holiness. Jesus also said, “It is narrow, hence difficult, but it is the only way”. Besides, the grace of God will always be there. Further, in this journey, three things we also remember:
- Our vocation is our path to holiness.
- The challenges and trials that we face are our paths to holiness.
- The difficult people in our lives are our path to holiness.
